But once the idea becomes a project, a whole new set of questions appears. Where do you start? How do you define your identity? How do you find your first opportunities? And how do you build something that can last? |
hEEElp, we’re starting an ensemble! is a new podcast from Sustainable-EEEMERGING, created as a practical audio guide for emerging early music artists navigating these first steps.
At the heart of the podcast is Alma, a young musician who has just finished her Early Music studies at the conservatoire. Together with a group of friends, she has created an early music ensemble — but she quickly realises that knowing what she wants to play is only the beginning. Now she needs to figure out how to actually make the ensemble work.
Across five short episodes, Alma explores the different stages of getting a new ensemble off the ground. She meets musicians and professionals, asks the questions that many emerging artists face, and discovers practical ways of approaching them.
The first season, Creating My Ensemble, explores:
- Artistic identity — What makes an ensemble unique, and how do you define what you want to say?
- From idea to concert — How do you build your first programmes and find your first opportunities?
- Becoming visible — How can you build a presence and communicate who you are as an ensemble?
- Getting on stage — What happens when your project moves from an idea to a real performance?
- Setting objectives — How do you set objectives and start thinking about the ensemble’s longer-term development?
Combining conversations with artists and professionals, real-life experiences, musical excerpts and practical advice, each episode offers a different piece of the puzzle.
There is no single roadmap for creating an ensemble, but hearing from people who have already navigated these questions can make the journey a little less daunting!
