Consort La Capriola

La Capriola emerged from the shared enthusiasm of a group of friends for Renaissance music, cultivated during their studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieure de Musique et de Danse de Lyon.

They aim to revitalize the forgotten tradition of the 16th-century violin consort and enrich their sound palette of instruments from the violin family by incorporating the expressive voice of Camille Fritsch and the triple harp. This also enables them to transition to a later trio formation, emblematic of the music of the early seventeenth century and its innovative expressive pathways.

The violin consort, of which the classical string quartet is a direct descendant, provides an ideal framework for exploring the sacred and secular polyphonic music of the sixteenth century, whose vast repertoire has yet to be explored. La Capriola invites to discover the richness of the languages and colors of the European musical Renaissance, (re)listened to through the prism of the violin. Taking an experimental and collaborative approach that bridges research and practice, La Capriola has been engaged in chamber music master at the CNSMDL since 2022. Within this program, they benefit from the stimulating teachings of Odile Édouard, Myriam Rignol, Anne Delafosse, and Tiago Simas-Freire.

Driven by a desire to explore lesser-known pieces, recontextualize these works, and share their artistry with audiences, they performed in various contexts such as the Auditorium of Lyon (ONL), at the Cathedral of Saint- Jean Baptiste and at the Military Governor’s Residence of Lyon, at the Louis Vouland Museum in Avignon, and at the early music festival Mars en Baroque in Marseille. In November 2023, La Capriola had the opportunity to record at the Palais des Papes in Avignon.
