The Green Room

Developing creative strategies for environmental and social change in the music sector

The Green Room is a non-profit association established in 2016 in Granville, France. First established as a non-formal collective of professionals from the music industry, The Green Room has been supporting environmental and social change in the music industry, performing arts and the cultural sector in general. Placing environmental issues at the core of its activity, The Green Room develops strategies, conducts research and co-creates solutions to mitigate the environmental impact of cultural professionals by jointly rethinking and adapting our practices. The organisation works on local, national and international scale, from supporting venues and providing workshops to musicians to collaborating with international professional events, organisations, projects and networks (Womex, On The Move, EMEE, Better Live, etc.)

Areas of activity:

  • Understanding and raising awareness on the environmental impacts of the cultural sector:
  • Awareness-raising workshops (digital responsibility, eco-design, materials, food, transport, etc.)
  • Tailor-made training modules

Impacts and obstacles:

  • Collaborative audit of ecological and social practices
  • Co-design of ecological and social self-diagnosis tools and action plans

Transform and act:

  • Co-construction of an operational roadmap
  • Support for the management of the actions/projects
  • Support for the design and programming of eco-responsible and sustainable cultural programmes with impact (residencies, tour, events, etc.)
  • Evaluation and analysis

Activities and experience:

The Green Room has a vast experience in development, production, coordination and management of complex projects linking culture, climate change and the environmental crises. The organisation also coaches, audits and evaluates different projects. The team has a strong cross-disciplinary expertise at the crossroads of culture, ecology and innovation, adapted to a changing and context-based cultural environment:

  • Strategic management and cultural production
  • Eco-responsible cultural monitoring and forecasting
  • Strategy for ecological and social responsibility
  • Ecodesign and circular economy
  • Codesign of collective intelligence systems
  • Design and animation of committed communities
  • Action-research projects

The Green Room is committed to the goals set out by the European Commission in the Green Deal strategy, aiming to become “climate-neutral” by 2050, as well as to the continuous improvement of our projects and processes.

The organisation takes into account the environmental and social impacts of its projects from the elaboration process: low carbon travel (soft mobility, train journeys favoured, no travel for isolated events…), local and seasonal food, responsible management, digital ecodesign of online tools and reasonable use, etc.
