Academia de Musica de Espinho
The Espinho Music Academy has consolidated itself as an educational establishment of recognized musical and artistic value, over its almost 60 years of history.
Having received the same designation as the association that provides legal and administrative support – the Espinho Music Academy, a non-profit association, founded in 1960 on the initiative and impulse of Professor Mário Neves, with the exemplary and enthusiastic support of the then Mayor. , Eng. Manuel Baptista, from Professor Gilberta Paiva, and other personalities of that time -, in 1961, the Academy obtained the necessary ministerial authorization to start functioning as a specialized music teaching establishment and thus teach official music courses, having he was granted the corresponding business license December 1962. Under the guidance and supervision of Professor Mário Neves, his first Artistic Director, the Academy has developed and consolidated over time, showing throughout its history a markedly pioneering role in several areas, whether in artistic education, or in the promotion and cultural dissemination ural.
Having, as a legal requirement, developed its activity during the first years as a school associated with the Conservatory of Music of Porto, namely in a pedagogical parallelism regime – thus conferring qualifications equivalent to those of public music conservatories -, the Academia Vi- subsequently, it will be recognized full pedagogical autonomy, starting to teach its courses and to issue the corresponding certifications without any dependence on public education. Currently, the Espinho Music Academy is part of the Portuguese educational system, within the scope of the specialized artistic education network, providing Basic and Secondary Music Courses, in an integrated, articulated and supplementary education regime, as well as, Pre-Initiation, Musical Initiation and Free Courses.
In collaboration with the Municipality of Espinho, he is pedagogically responsible for the teaching of curricular enrichment activities in the Municipality of Espinho, following, furthermore, the program “Expression and Musical Education in Schools of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education in the Municipality of Espinho ”that, also in partnership with the Municipality, developed since 1988, and that allowed all children of the 1st cycle of Basic Education the curricular access to musical activities in the school, an unprecedented and pioneering initiative at national level.
Resuming one of its strengths that in the 70s and 80s of the last century had a great impact on the teaching of languages in Espinho – then filling the lack of local supply in this area -, in 2013 the Academy relaunched its Language School, starting to offer students the possibility of, within the same socio-educational context, integrating their artistic training with the in-depth study of foreign languages, with a predominance of English and German.
The pioneering character and the will to innovate that from the first day acted as fundamental vectors of the Academy’s action, combined with the great demand and quality in terms of artistic education, are still today distinguishing factors of its educational project and inalienable traits of its institutional culture.
In the development of its educational activities, namely in the Basic and Secondary Courses of Music and Musical Initiation, the Espinho Music Academy is co-financed by the Ministry of Education through the signing of sponsorship contacts.
