The first European Baroque Academy training!

The 22nd Ambronay European Baroque Academy will be conducted by Paul Agnew, who for the first time will take on the musical direction, staging and educational supervision. For this occasion, the associate conductor of Les Arts Florissants, has put together a beautiful programme inspired by the story of Dido. As an appetiser he presents us with extracts from the opera Didon by Henry Desmarest, and for the main course the opera Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell.
The 9 singers and the harpsichordist of the next European Baroque Academy, accompanied by Jadran Duncumb who is the Repicco’s theorbist, met in Ambronay from 16 to 21 April for a first training. Mentored by Paul Agnew, Marie Von Rhijn (vocal coach) and Sophie Daneman (singer, who played the role of Belinda at the Academy directed by Christophe Coin in 1995!), they  worked on the scores of Purcell and Desmarest. For teaching purposes, Paul Agnew wished that the singers worked on all of the roles including those beyond their tessitura (the baritones learn the role of Belinda, for example, and the sopranos that of Aeneas). An excellent technique to soak up the works on the program! They also carried out a delicate task of pronunciation and interpretation. The second training, with the entire orchestra, will begin at the Collegio Ghislieri in Pavia on June 25th. The singers will practice with the instrumentalists to set out in space and make this work a reality.
